Through the image of migrating wild geese, the poet elaborates a reflection on the capacity of the simplest possible sign to bear a considerable symbolic and affective charge.

The poem rests upon a central tension: how can a minimal form — a single letter traced across the sky — produce an effect of meaning and memory greater than that of an entire library?

We may then ask in what way this poem constructs a poetics of the sign, in which formal simplicity becomes the vehicle of a profound experience of exile and nostalgia.

We shall see that the text is built first upon a writing of the sign and of minimalism, before unfolding a poetics of exile, and finally arriving at a reflection on the symbolic power of language.

I. A Poetics of the Sign: The Letter as Primal Writing

From the opening lines, the poem establishes a central metaphor:

"the geese are likened to writing subjects, describing themselves as tracing the one letter they know how to write"

Yet their writing is reduced to a single letter, the "V." This radical reduction of language to a solitary sign constitutes a form of primal writing, anterior to all linguistic complexity.

The following line, which isolates and exalts this "magnificent V," graphically and symbolically sets the letter apart. It becomes an autonomous, almost iconic figure. The "V" is no longer merely a letter but a visual shape, a trace inscribed upon the sky.

This passage from language to image reveals a fundamental tension: the sign is at once linguistic and plastic. It belongs as much to writing as to drawing.

Finally, the poem situates this act within "the sky of their exile", a phrase of decisive importance. The sky becomes a page, and exile a condition of writing. The act of writing proves inseparable from displacement, loss, and distance.

Thus, from the very first lines, Kadaré constructs a poetics of the minimal sign, wherein a simple geometric form becomes the bearer of meaning.

II. A Writing of Exile: Between Loss and Transmission

The poem then unfolds around a double movement

"The geese are said to leave something behind them
even as they carry something else beyond the clouds

This parallel structure brings to light a tension between what is abandoned and what is borne away. Exile is thus not merely a loss: it is also a form of transport, a transformation.

The geese's flight becomes a metaphor for the exile's condition — on the one hand, leaving behind a part of one's identity; on the other, carrying forward a memory, like an invisible trace

The phrase evoking "this essential beauty" introduces a form of distillation. The essential does not lie in accumulation but in condensation. Beauty is born here of the simplicity of the gesture — that of tracing a single letter across the sky.

The apostrophe "giving thanks to the wild geese" lends the poem an almost liturgical dimension. The geese become mediating figures, nearly sacred, capable of revealing a truth about the human condition.

Thus, the poem transforms a natural scene into an allegory of exile, in which the migratory movement becomes the site of a symbolic transmission.

III. The Power of Minimal Language: Against the Library

The final part of the poem introduces a major opposition:

"a single letter, traced in the immeasurably grey sky, sufficed — better than a library — to give shape to our nostalgia.»

This statement forms the theoretical heart of the poem. On one side, the library represents:

the accumulation of knowledge

institutionalised culture

organised memory

On the other, the single letter represents:

simplicity

immediacy

the power of the symbo.

The poem thus enacts a reversal. A single letter, fleetingly traced in the sky, possesses a greater evocative force than an entire library.

This reversal rests upon a fundamental idea: that language does not derive its worth from quantity, but from its capacity to embody an experience.

The phrase describing the letter as giving shape to nostalgia is especially significant. It suggests that the letter does more than signify — it gives material form to a collective emotion. Nostalgia becomes almost visible, made incarnate in the sky.

The qualifier "immeasurably grey," applied to the sky, further intensifies this dynamic. The greyness of the sky evokes uniformity, emptiness, even desolation. It is within this neutral space that the letter attains its full power, becoming a visual and symbolic event.

Thus, the poem affirms a profoundly modern conception of language: that the simplest sign may contain a maximal density of emotion and symbol.

Conclusion :

In this brief yet remarkably dense poem, Ismaïl Kadaré develops a reflection on language, exile, and memory, proceeding from a single image: the wild geese's V-formation in flight.

Through a poetics of the minimal sign, he demonstrates that formal simplicity can produce an exceptional symbolic power. The "V" becomes at once writing, image, and trace of exile.

The poem thus proposes an implicit theory of language, according to which meaning does not arise from the accumulation of signs, but from their capacity to condense a fundamental human experience.

In this respect, it belongs to a modern tradition that interrogates the relationship between language and reality, while retaining a profoundly lyrical and universal dimension.
